Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) will be given immediate instructions to start procurement of one million bales of cotton from farmers, said Deputy Prime Minister and PML-Q leader Chaudhry Parvez Elahi. He said this while talking to a delegation of Pakistan Kissan Ittehad, which headed by Abdul Rehman Kanju, called on him at the State Guest House here on Tuesaday.
Regarding agricultural tariff for electricity and other issues of farmers, Elahi assured the delegation that he would take up the matter with Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf for its resolution. "We are still standing shoulder to shoulder with the farmers and would go to every extent for the resolution of their problems," he said, adding: "We have always supported the farmers and he would discuss their problems with PM Pervez Ashraf for their resolution."
Abdul Rehman Kanju apprised Deputy Prime Minister about problems faced by the farmers, and alleged that the Punjab government was treating the South Punjab step motherly. He said TCP should immediately start procurement of cotton from farmers; power tariff was increased every month for agricultural tube-wells in South Punjab whereas no such increase is affected in the power tariff for Gujranwala and Lahore divisions.
Elahi said that during his tenure as the Chief Minister, taxes were remitted to the small Zamindars besides provision of special subsidy for the farmers. He said result-oriented steps were taken for checking water theft and ensuring water reaches till tail-end, while Pukka watercourses were constructed, laser leveller and stipends for livestock growth and other facilities were provided. Moreover, Pakistan Muslim League-Q leader and Deputy Prime Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi and Moonis Elahi visited the residence of former President of Supreme Court Bar Association Asma Jahangir and offered condolences to her and Hina Jilani over the demise of their mother.
