Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng arrives in Pakistan to attend CPEC celebrations

  • He Lifeng has played a prominent role in China’s international economic relations and implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative
Published July 29, 2023 Updated July 30, 2023

Chinese Vice Premier, He Lifeng, has arrived in Pakistan for a three-day visit to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Advisor to the PM Tariq Fatimi received the honourable guest on his arrival at the airport.

Ahead of the visit, banners celebrating the anniversary and flags of both countries were displayed across the Pakistan capital.

The Foreign Office (FO) announced on Saturday that the Chinese vice premier would be in Pakistan from July 30 (today) to August 1 (Tuesday) to attend a ceremony celebrating 10 years of CPEC as the chief guest.

He Lifeng will call on President Dr Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his visit.

Vice Premier He Lifeng has played a prominent role in China’s international economic relations and implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative, of which CPEC is a flagship project.

As the Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission (2017-23), he was instrumental in the planning and execution of multiple CPEC projects in Pakistan.

“ Pakistan and China exchange high-level visits and dialogue regularly, the foreign office said, highlighting the importance of the All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership between the two nations.

The FO statement added that these visits are also intended to reaffirm support for each other’s core interests, enhance economic and financial cooperation, advance high-quality development of CPEC, and explore new ways to strengthen ties between the two countries.

In recent years Beijing has been one of Islamabad’s most reliable foreign partners – readily providing financial assistance to bail out its often struggling neighbour.

Earlier this week, Beijing granted Pakistan a two-year rollover on a $2.4 billion loan, giving the debt-saddled nation much-needed breathing space as it tackles a balance-of-payments crisis.

An IMF report last year said China and its commercial banks held about 30 percent of Pakistan’s total external debt.

@Ahmad Azeez, You are wrong completely. The elite has been destroying this country from the past 75 years. Every single leader that has come to power has gone to IMF begging for dollars which has worsen the financial situation even more. Chinese went to Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Phillippines, Indonesia and now they are the financial powerhouses of ASEAN. Americans went to Libya, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and they are the most destructed nations in the Middle East. Whether Party X comes or Party Y comes or Party Z comes the leaders are chosen from the elite class collectively to beg for dollars from IMF and sell the honour of the nation for just few billion dollars. Niazi was launched by the establishment in 2013 to counter the Chinese influence in the country. Back in 1990s China offered Musharraf to transfer industrial manufacturing to Pakistan in return for strategic partnership but Musharraf refused that by saying that he will protect western interests & those industry go to ASEAN

@Fatima, If Niazi was not launched by the establishment back in 2013 then CPEC would have been completed on time with both sides in a win win situation. He was definitely launched by the establishment to counter the chinese influence in Pakistan. Politicians, Generals, Billionaires, Land Lords, Policy Makers, Media Houses etc they all have their personal political, financial and foreign western interests which they are protecting just like from the past 75 years. Every single politician, general, businessmen, policy maker make those policies which revolve around begging. Even Niazi went to IMF too to beg for dollars. Niazi said that he will commit suicide but will not go to IMF and he went to IMF and didn't commited suicide. Nawaz Sharif said it is better to die then to go to IMF and he went to IMF but he didn't die. Whenever a politician or general comes the elite class gives them an urgent and big task and that is to beg for dollars and sell the national honour just for few billions.
