West African army chiefs will meet on Thursday in Ghana’s capital Accra to discuss a possible military intervention in Niger if diplomacy fails to reverse a military coup.

Members of Niger’s presidential guard, headed by General Abdourahmane Tiani, seized power last month, drawing condemnation from global powers and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which decided last week to assemble a standby military force.

The ECOWAS army chiefs’ meeting will start at the headquarters of Ghana’s armed forces around 0900 GMT on Thursday and end on Friday afternoon.

Niger’s junta has said it is open to talks to resolve the situation.

But it is still detaining deposed President Mohamed Bazoum and has said it will prosecute him for high treason, which has been viewed as a sign it is unwilling to seek a peaceful route out of the crisis.

The African Union, the European Union, the United States and the United Nations have all said they are worried about Bazoum’s detention conditions.

Any military intervention could further destabilise the impoverished Sahel region, where an insurgency by groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State has displaced millions over the past decade and fuelled a hunger crisis.

The country also has strategic importance to global powers due to its uranium and oil deposits.

After the successful Abhinandan episode, Nigeria inducted JF-17s into their Air Force. They were already relying on our trainer aircraft to train their pilots. Seeing how effective they were in fighting against insurgencies in the north of Nigeria, we can fairly conclude that if there was an invasion of Niger spearheaded by Nigeria, Pakistani Air Force manufacturing will definitely see a tremendous boost. Not just Nigeria, the strongest nation in ECOWAS, but also other African nations can benefit from a defence partnership with Pakistan. Similarly, Pakistan is the only country in the world with Ukrainian tanks that can only be delivered if they will be replaced with three times the M1 Abrams tanks. A growth in defence production could’ve been a priority of our past governments but they chose to destabilize Pakistan only to control government resources, either for embezzlement or to introduce government social welfare programs in which they had a very significant conflict of interest.
