Exorbitant power bills: Interim PM to hold emergency meeting tomorrow

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has called an emergency meeting on Sunday to address the issue of inflated electricity bills.

“I have called an emergency meeting at the Prime Minister’s House tomorrow on the issue of high electricity bills,” said Kakar in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday.

“In the meeting, a briefing will be taken from the Ministry of Power and distribution companies,” he said, adding: “Consultations will be held regarding giving maximum relief to consumers on electricity bills.”

The remarks come after nationwide protests erupted against electricity distribution companies citing prolonged power cuts and skyrocketing tariffs.

Authorities have been compelled to raise electricity tariffs, a key requirement given by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), to meet its revenue target.

However, this has agitated the masses, who are already bearing the brunt of record high inflation and slow economic growth.

On Friday, different segments of society including political parties and trader associations took to the streets, protesting against frequent and skyrocketing increases in electricity tariffs and alleged overbilling by the K-Electric.

Moreover, Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has sought the deployment of a police force at its offices to avoid “unpleasant” situations.

In a letter to Rawalpindi’s city police officer available with Business Recorder, IESCO said that consumers are visiting its offices in “groups and mobs to protest against electricity issues.”

“The employees of IESCO are feeling un-rest while performing their duties.

“The situation is quite alarming which may lead to create law and order damaging of IESCO property/installations etc,” the letter read.

Simple solution Cut the freebies and do away with all the subsidies and uniform rates like petrol for all. The only solution to reduce circular debt.

Give them cash vouchers - this would technically be targeted subsidy which wouldn't violate agreement with IMF. Additionally, I think it's ripe time to start discussing elimination of free electricity quota to various government departments. There is no room for that anymore.

The ignorant jaahil traders and public need to be educated by force. They must be forced to understand the real causes of such inflated bills. Inflated bills can never be the cause for any sort of civil disobedience and law and order disturbance. Traders are the thieves too. They are as corrupt as ruling and political elite. What happened to K-Electric staff in Karachi timber market, is simply unacceptable. Common man must protest against the thieves and corrupt people, irrespective of the culprit's social standing. For the time being, the bills need to be paid to save the economy. Chaos needs to be avoided at any cost.

People need to live within their means. They should stop using whatever they can't afford. Mobiles, TV, such other gadgets. They will be able to afford Gas and electricity. Even then if not affordable, they must resort to stone-age living style. But such sort of social unrest is prohibited and not allowed. Such protestors need to be culled and annihilated for good.

@Kashif ALI, Mr Kashif Ali have you experienced a time when you are job less married and then deprieve of basic needs .For example try to sleep at night but cant use ac . less income and high bills. bhai ap ko kia pta kitne mehngi bijli hai. agar karna hai to sare ashrfia me ayashi kahtam kareim. Karachi mein jo hoa wo to mein kahta hun sare mulk mein ho.Awam jag aur in harmiaoun ka gala pakre. Ap ka bhi agar ap ko yeah acha na lage. agar abhi bhi tum yeah kahte ho ke un educated log hain to phir bhai ap ka ALLAH HAFIZ.ap chup kar ke 70 rupee unit bharo

Publish a full list of non-paying customers - govt departments, companies, landlords, traders, common man - with the amount of unpaid bills. And another list of those who get free electricity.

no government takes any action against the Discos for energy loss , so encouraging theft . They all only increase the cost of bijli to those who pay. So we must now add to the long list of non-deserving recipients of march 23 awards at Preseident House, a Medal for the largest electricity thief
