The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is going to establish Water and Sanitation Company (Wasco) for guaranteeing the supply of drinking water and cleanliness in the provincial metropolis informed sources in department of planning and development.
The important project has already been included in the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for the current financial year 2012-13. The government has allocated an amount of Rs 300 million and is making al out efforts to materialise it as soon as possible.
The project would be initially started in Peshawar as pilot project and later such schemes would also be extended to other big cities of the province. About two months back senior minister and parliamentary leader of ANP in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Bashir Ahmad Bilour have also hinted at embarking on such multifaceted project for Peshawar.
The company besides, carrying responsibility of purifying process of drinking water will also maintain sanitation standards and will carrying services like testing raw materials and imparting skill to different stakeholders in provision of civic amenities to the people. The company will also maintain close co-ordination with Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research PCSIR) Laboratories and others agencies of science and technology.
The officials of the provincial government said that process of land acquisition for this important project is underway and work would soon start once this matter is addressed.
Similarly, the officials of the department of P&D said that the government has also planned to construct sewerage/drainage system in Charsadda district with an estimated cost of Rs 80 million, adding that Rs 40 million was earmarked for current financial year.
They said that the devastating floods of 2010 have badly affected drainage system of Charsadda and required immediate repair. The drainage system of villages directly located on bank of River Kabul, River Swat and River Khayali also require repair/maintenance work.
Similarly, the government would spend Rs 190 million on construction of the incomplete district secretariat Swat with allocation of Rs 80 million for the current financial year.
In tourism sector projects, he said the existing chairlift at Ayubia, Abbottabad would be replaced to provide quality entertainment facilities to tourists. The existing lift wire of about two-kilometer long, which supports chairlifts, would also be replaced with the latest one and work on this mega project would also start in current fiscal year under the aegis of Galliyat Development Authorities (GDA).
The official said this project was also included in Annual Development Programme with allocation of Rs 500 million including Rs 100 million for CFY, adding the chairlifts is outdated and needs replacement. Focus would be made to make the new chairlifts widen/strengthen to accept the load of three to four persons and avoid human losses in future, he said, adding the track/poles will also be improved and be made lush green.
Replacement of the chairlifts is one of the 13 new projects of the Khyber Pakthunkhwa Government on which work will start in current fiscal year. It includes construction of district secretariats in Swat and Kohistan, southern area development project, local development initiatives in Dir lower and Upper, feasibility and designing of bus terminals in Mardan on public private partnerships.
The government has allocated Rs 4704.272 million for 35 projects out of which 22 are ongoing and 13 are new in current fiscal year for regional sector uplift.
He said area development projects play a significant role in enhancing the agriculture producing, natural resource management and development. Its goal is to contribute to poverty reduction in the target areas through increased income and access to productive assets.
These multi-sectors projects are aimed at reducing poverty by investing in social services, rural infrastructure, support services and strengthening of institutions for better resources management and generating employment.
The mega projects in regional sector include Torghar and Kohistan Area development Project (TKDP), Bacha Khan Poverty Alleviation Program (BPAP) and Refugees Affected and Hosting Area (RAHA) Project, which execute multiple interventions pertaining to rural roads, provision of potable water, natural resources management, micro-finance services, micro health insurance and skill development within their respective ambit.
During the current financial year, the provincial government will complete the black topping of 22 roads, construct 23 kilometers shingle roads and 463 community based infrastructure schemes. A project for construction of parking plaza at Nathia Gali, Abbottabad with an estimated cost of Rs 75 million was also under consideration. Furthermore, an amount of Rs 120 million has been allocated for local development initiatives in districts Chitral, Dir Upper and Dir Lower.
