ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, on Thursday, unanimously, recommended that the passing percentage for NLE exams should be set at 50 per cent.

The meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services and Coordination was held on Thursday under the Chairmanship of Senator Dr Muhammad Humayun Mohmand, here at the Parliament House.

The committee debated at length on the matter of passing marks of previous and forthcoming NRE examinations in comparison with developed and developing countries, on the special request of Senator Dr Mehr Taj Roghani.

The committee debated that in 2012, 50 per cent candidates were passed by PMDC and in 2017 and 2019 also the success ratio for NLE exam was 50 per cent. And in October 2021, the exam was set at 70 per cent passing percentage.

The PMDC maintained that in developed countries the percentage is 70 per cent, however, Senator Prof Mehr Taj Roghani disagreed with this opinion of global practice in the percentage of success in the NLE exam set at 70 per cent. Senator Bahramand Khan Tangi also said that like other countries of the world, the percentage of NRE exam should be 50 per cent in Pakistan, and believed that this way the doctor community is being oppressed.

Earlier, the committee took up the issue of MRI machine in PIMS hospital.

The ED PIMS assured the committee that the MRI machine has become functional since 13th October and will be officially inaugurated on October 27 by the federal minister for health.

The committee was also assured that within four months, MRI machine will also be procured for Polyclinic Hospital. The chairman committee stressed that at least six to seven MRI machines should be mandatory in government hospitals of Islamabad.

The committee also discussed in detail the matter of the deputation of employees at PIMS Hospital and Polyclinic Hospital. It was apprised that 24 employees of Pims Hospital are working on deputation to other hospitals, and 49 employees of various hospitals departments are working on deputation basis in PIMS.

The meeting was attended by senators, Prof Dr Mehr Taj Roghani, Sana Jamali, Rubina Khalid, Jam Mahtab Hussain Dahar, Bahramand Khan Tangi, and Fawzia Arshad.

Senior officials from the ministry and other attached departments were also in attendance.

The same people who want 50% are the ones who do not get any medical treatment in Pakistan. They and their families go overseas for all treatments.
