Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Tuesday took suo motu notice of declaring 13 girls as wani by a jirga in Balochistan's Dera Bugti, a private TV reported. Wani is a child marriage custom in tribal areas of Pakistan. While hearing Balochistan unrest case at Supreme Court's Balochistan registry, the CJP ordered MPA Mir Tariq Masuri, who allegedly presided over the jirga, and all members of that tribal jirga to appear before the court on Wednesday.
Reports said a jirga in Dera Bugti decided to give away 13 girls in marriage to settle a murder-related conflict between two tribes last month. Deputy Commissioner, Dera Bugti, Syed Faisal, appeared before the three-member bench, comprising Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Jawad S. Khwaja. He told the bench that the incident took place 15 days back in Balochistan's Barkhan area where seven girls were declared wani.
