ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has seized a batch of contaminated propylene glycol solvent that was labelled as manufactured by Dow Chemical, Thailand, the nation’s drug regulatory authority said on Thursday.

Dow Chemical, Thailand did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

The move comes as authorities have identified toxic propylene glycol used in cough syrups as a possible reason for the deaths of more than 300 children in Indonesia, Gambia and Uzbekistan since 2022.

The World Health Organization has linked the deaths outside Indonesia to cough syrups made in India.

“The Regulatory field force has taken possession of a contaminated batch of Propylene Glycol and is investigating the entire supply chain of this batch,” Pakistan’s drug authority said in an alert, ordering the recall from local and export markets of any products manufactured from the same batch of propylene glycol.

India firm denies tampering with tests in probe of cough syrup deaths

“The batch was labelled as manufactured by Dow Chemical, Thailand,” it said.

“On analysis of a sample by the Central Drug Laboratory in Karachi, an unacceptable level of Ethylene Glycol was found,” which can lead to serious health risks, the drug authority said.

Indians will go to any extent to vindicate themselves even when caught with hands in the cooky jar.

@KU, Have some perspective. Indian Pharma is $50+ billion in exports. Billions of tables medicines exported worldwide and one unscrupulous pharmacy screwed up a batch. That is a not a testament on the entire Pharma industry. Many vital and life-saving drugs from Indian Pharma are imported to Pakistan everyday, making your care affordable and saving lives. This in spite of Pakistan stopping trade. So yeah, one company screwed up. But thank the others that are sending medicines to Pakistan.

@TimetoMoVVeOn , pathetic explanation, so couple of hundred children dying because someone was irresponsible is ok? And then denying and refusing to admit the responsibility.

What tests were carried out to prove that the batch was contaminated? Most probably none. The country does not have the test labs nor the materials to carry out such tests. I doubt if there are qualified personnel either to carry out these tests. Looks more like a shakedown.

@Johnny Walker, as a pharmacist working in pharmaceutical industry ,this comment of yours seems like a joke to me .Yes everyone outside of whatever heaven you live in has regulatory authorities that do check and balance.I mean do they literally have to write the name of tests that were carried out when there were literally hundreds of children that died because of negligence .I mean if anything you should be asking their authorities that why were they not able to complete procedures resulting in death of innocent infants
