HYDERABAD: The first-ever Pakistani literature in English Expo 2024 was held at the Institute of English Language & Literature (IELL), University of Sindh Jamshoro, showcasing poster presentations prepared by the group of students.
The exhibition was organized by the students of BS Part-III and MA (Previous) English literature morning program under the supervision of Dr. Waseem Hassan Malik. Over 1000 students of the IELL participated in the event who were enthralled by the posters presented there at the poster show.
A number of posters demonstrating the significance of Pakistani literature being primed by different writers and authors in the English language were put on display by different 17 groups. The students also displayed books of Pakistani Anglophone writers and a large collection of creative writing (poetry and short stories) and art from the participating events.
Speaking with the students on the occasion, Dr. Waseem Hassan Malik said that the purpose of the first-of-its-kind Expo was to introduce Pakistani English Literature to students and scholars and familiarize them with the origin, development, themes, and issues. He said that critiques were necessary to improve the content and the same was being carried out on Pakistani English writings.
Director of the Institute of English Language & Literature Dr. Abdul Fattah Soomro said that the event had given students of the institute an opportunity to know about Pakistani English writers and learn from their experiences. He said that the finest works of Pakistani writers had been presented in the expo and this is the best opportunity for students to learn from their techniques. He appreciated the hard work and efforts of the supervisor and the students equally and vowed to continue with the tradition of organizing such wonderful academic events from time to time by the institute.
The former head of the English department Prof. Dr. Farida Yasmeen Panhwar said that the Institute of English Language & Literature was the only institute dedicated to creating a critical mass of work focusing on Pakistani novelists, playwrights, poets, essayists, authors, translators, and critics. She said since its inception, the institute had raised awareness for the appreciation of Pakistani literature among the masses, especially its students and research scholars.
Earlier, former Director IELL Dr. Tariq Hassan Umrani, Dr. Ghulam Ali Buriro, Dr. Sanaullah Ansari, Dr. Abdul Hameed Panhwar, Dr. Ghazal Shaikh, Dr. Mubarak Ali Lashari and other faculty members jointly inaugurated the event.
