ISLAMABAD: United States Ambassador to Pakistan, Donald Blome, on Tuesday, discussed “judicial independence, upholding human rights, and strengthening the rule of law” with Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar.

In a statement, US Mission Spokesperson Jonathan Lalley stated that Ambassador Blome met with Minister Tarar to discuss a broad range of issues important to the bilateral relationship, including judicial independence, upholding human rights, and strengthening the rule of law.

“Ambassador Blome expressed US support for Pakistan’s democracy and continued economic, political, and social development,” the spokesperson added.

No further detail of the discussion was given by the spokesperson, as the US has been raising concerns over the safety of political prisoners including former prime minister Imran Khan.

However, the Foreign Office recently rejected these reservations, saying “Pakistan has a judicial system which is capable of taking decisions in light of local laws and the country’s Constitution and that it does not need any directions from anyone.”
