The Government of Denmark has announced $2.6 million in immediate humanitarian assistance to Pakistan's flood victims. This announcement was made by the Danish Minister for Development, Christian Friis Bach on Friday.
Minister Bach stated that "The new flood situation in Pakistan is an overlooked humanitarian disaster. Hundreds of thousands are without any shelter or food for themselves or their families. Many of them were already very vulnerable due to pronounced poverty and similar floods in the past two years, but today they are facing a desperate situation. It is therefore crucial that the international community steps forward to help them."
Half of the Danish contribution is going to the World Food Programme (WFP) to support with food supplies; whereas the other half will be given to UNICEF for provision of water, latrines and healthcare to the affected, as well as access to education for affected children.
Ambassador Moesby shared that "Although the extent of the floods are collectively less compared to the past two years, the impact is still disastrous. Seven of the worst affected districts are worse hit than in the past. They were affected in both 2010 as well as 2011, so the damages were far from repaired thus leaving the local population in a very vulnerable and alarming situation.-PR
