The price of chicken meat further declined from Rs 200 per kilogram to Rs 180 just nine days ahead of Eidul Azha. The sharp decline was also attributed to a weakening demand and constant bulk supply. Last week, price of chicken meat had declined from Rs 240 to Rs 200 per kg.
The decline over the past two weeks totals Rs 60 per kg. People in Karachi usually consumed at 500,000 broiler birds, while only 350,000-400,000 birds are being slaughtered owing to a depression in demand. As a general trend, an overwhelming majority of consumers buy chicken meat in bulk and stored in refrigerators and freezers and consume it piecemeal. With Eidul Azha fast approaching, people prefer to empty their refrigerators to store meat of sacrificial animals.
