Foreign travel ban on non-filers: NICOP holders, minors, students to be exempted

  • Tax expert questions how FBR would impose ban on non-filers (family members), who are actually dependent on the filer
Published June 24, 2024

ISLAMABAD: The restriction on foreign travel of non-filers from Pakistan would not be applicable on persons holding National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP), minors, students and any other classes of persons as notified by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

The Finance Bill 2024 has proposed restriction on foreign travel, for a citizen of Pakistan excluding persons having NICOP, minors, students and other classes of persons as notified by the FBR for non-filing of return if liable to file return of income.

A tax expert stated that to encourage filing of return, the Finance Bill proposes to impose restrictions on foreign travel for Pakistani citizens. However, these restrictions shall not apply to individuals holding NICOP, minors, students, and other classes of persons.

Some taxation measures: No final decision taken on reversal: FBR

The proposed amendment aims to promote a culture of filing of returns of income in Pakistan, he added.

The tax expert raised a question how the FBR would impose a ban on non-filers (family members), who are actually dependent on the filer and their details have been fully declared in the income tax returns of the filer (family head).

Excellent but exemptions only by Cabinet not FBR . A tax payer should only be-able to take his immediate family: wife and dependent children

It is good step in the direction. There could some problem to some people but it will bring rationality in spending.

We should have immediate elections where only filers should be allowed vote. This will hopefully end political careers of all these clowns in the federal amd provincial government, assemblies & senate

Reduce cash withdrawls by bank.Limit them to 20k a month. The lesser the physical cash the lesser the chances of tax evasions. For non filers cash withdrawls should be 5k a month only.

@Humayun Niazi , if you are retired you should still file your returns , and pay Tax on your pensions and perks if any Tax due. I’m told if you get govt pensions of even Rs 12m it’s Tax Free

Shows the government is shortsighted as ever. How is the common worker to go to the Middle East? They are usually barely educated enough to read a sentence, let alone write.

@Humayun Niazi , These restrictions are not for everyone but only for those who are liable to file the return but have not done so.
