LAHORE: Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazir Tarar has said the constitution permits the appointment of ad hoc judges; hence, ad hoc judges should be appointed.

In a statement, the Law Minister rejected reports about extension in the tenure of Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa.

Regarding the issue of invoking Article 6 against the PTI leaders, he said the issue of Article 6 can be debated in Parliament.

Azam Nazir Tarar said that the news about extension of the tenure of Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa was not true.

He said that ad hoc judges would be appointed by the Judicial Commission and not by the CJP himself. He revealed that he held a meeting with the CJP regarding the meeting of the Judicial Commission. “The issue of extension was also discussed, Chief Justice said that he is not interested in extension of his tenure,” Tarar said, adding: “Justice Mansoor Ali Shah agreed to the proposal to extend the tenure of the Chief Justice. Justice Mansoor said that Parliament has the authority to extend the tenure of the CJP.”

He said he was in favour of the constitutional amendment to reform the judicial system. “The proposal to extend the tenure of all government employees, including the judiciary, was under consideration and Parliament has the power to amend the constitution,” Tarar said.

On the issue of imposition of Article 6 on PTI leaders, the Law Minister said that the PTI was not calling a meeting on no-confidence motion. He said this issue would be taken up in the Parliament.

The PTI violated the constitution by dissolving the assemblies in the presence of no-confidence motion, there is a genuine case of Article 6 on the leaders of Tehreek-e-Insaf, he opined. He added that Tehreek-e-Insaf took an unconstitutional step by dissolving the assemblies, there may be a debate in the parliament regarding Article 6 the decision not to ban PTI last year was to maintain political environment.
