PMD predicts torrential rains across country from August 1

  • Met Office warns of possible flash flooding in local streams and nullahs in Kashmir, KP, and northern Punjab

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Wednesday predicted winds, torrential showers and thunderstorms across the country from August 1 to 6.

The Met Office said in a statement that strong monsoon currents are likely to penetrate from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal in the upper parts from July the night of July 31, and then in central and southern parts from August 2.

As a result of the new weather system, rain and thunderstorms with scattered heavy falls are anticipated in Kashmir, including Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, and Rawalakot, among others. This pattern is expected to continue intermittently until August 6th.

From August 1st to 6th, scattered heavy rains with isolated very heavy falls are forecast for several areas in Punjab and Islamabad, including Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Sialkot with intermittent breaks. In southern Punjab, cities like Multan, Bahawalpur, and Rahimyar Khan are expected to see heavy rain from August 2nd to 6th.

In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, heavy rains with isolated very heavy falls are predicted from the evening of August 1st through August 6th. Affected areas include Peshawar, Swat, and Mansehra, among others.

Rain and thunderstorms with a few heavy falls are expected in Balochistan’s regions such as Quetta, Zhob, and Lasbella, starting from the evening of August 2nd and lasting until August 6th.

Sindh will also experience scattered heavy rains, particularly in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur, from the night of August 2nd to August 6th.

Partly cloudy to cloudy weather is expected in Gilgit-Baltistan, with rain anticipated from the evening of August 3rd to August 6th.

The Met Office has warned of possible flash flooding in local streams and nullahs in various regions, including Kashmir, KP, and northern Punjab. Urban flooding is also a concern in low-lying areas of major cities like Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar.
