A top American trade official who unexpectedly cancelled a trip to Taiwan earlier this year is set to visit the island Tuesday, officials said, following the lifting by Taipei of what the US said was a key trade barrier. Francisco Sanchez, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade at the US Department of Commerce, will visit Taipei from October 30 through November 1, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) said.
"He is visiting Asia to promote President Obama's National Travel and Tourism Strategy and the National Export Initiative, which aims to double US exports by the end of 2014," the de facto embassy said in a statement. "He will highlight the many opportunities for Taiwan investors in the United States through the newly executed SelectUSA initiative."
