ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research (MNFSR) Rana Tanveer Hussain highlighted the crucial role of livestock in Pakistan’s economy, stating that it contributes 14.63 percent to the national gross domestic product (GDP) and 60.8 percent to the agricultural GDP.

Speaking at the 1st Animal Welfare Forum, organised in collaboration with the MNFSR, he emphasised that livestock supports millions of livelihoods, particularly in rural areas.

Hussain underscored the need for federal legislation to improve animal health and welfare in the country. He pointed out that the National Animal Health, Welfare, and Veterinary Public Health Bill 2024, which has been approved in principle by the cabinet, is a key step towards aligning Pakistan’s veterinary services with international standards.

The minister explained that the bill adopts the "One Health Approach," which combines human, animal, and environmental health to create a unified strategy for controlling diseases and preventing pandemics.

He urged provincial assemblies to pass the bill, stressing that it would enhance inter-provincial coordination and ensure compliance with global animal health standards.

Hussain also noted the importance of strengthening the livestock sector not only for food security but also for Pakistan’s economic growth.

He pointed out that recent zoonotic diseases, such as Covid-19, have highlighted the need for a more robust health system, and the absence of comprehensive federal legislation limits the country’s ability to address veterinary challenges effectively.

The minister reiterated Pakistan’s goal of increasing halal meat exports on the global market and emphasised the importance of provincial cooperation in advancing this critical legislation.

Agri-sector has become our discontent n purely because of neglect by Raj baboos. Govt only highlights importance of livestock at least six times a year n do nothing, especially work on local breeds.
