Published December 26, 2024

Military courts have sentenced 60 more civilians to prison terms ranging from 2 to 10 years for their involvement in violent attacks on military installations during nationwide riots in May 2023, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Thursday.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan’s nephew Hassan Khan Niazi is also among those sentenced by military courts.

The development comes after military courts last week sentenced 25 civilians to prison terms ranging from 2 to 10 years in connection to May 9, 2023, riots.

As of now, 85 civilians have been sentenced by military courts in the cases related to May 9 riots.

All convicts retain the right to appeal and other legal recourses, as guaranteed by the Constitution and law.

In a statement today, the ISPR said the Field General Court Martial promulgated the punishments to remaining 60 culprits after “examining all evidences, ensuring the provision of all legal rights to the convicts, completion of due process and the appropriate legal proceedings”.

The military’s media wing further said the trial of the accused under military custody was concluded under the relevant laws and “all convicts retain the right to appeal and other legal recourses, as guaranteed by the Constitution and law”.

“The nation, government, and the armed forces remain steadfast in their commitment to upholding justice and ensuring that the inviolable writ of the state is maintained,” the ISPR said.

Good job military courts! Meanwhile our regular courts let off murderers, rapists, frauds, terrorists and delay hearings for decades on simplest matters
