ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday strongly condemned the “unjust and inhumane” rulings of military courts, terming them blatant human rights violations as well as affronts to fundamental rights, undermining the judicial system and tarnishing country’s reputation.
Reacting to military courts’ verdicts which sentenced 60 more pro-Imran Khan protesters in connection with May 9 protests, PTI spokesman Sheikh Waqas Akram said that Akram said that prosecution of civilians in military courts contravenes Pakistan's commitments under international human rights law, in addition to infringing upon its own fundamental and constitutional rights.
He continued that trial of civilians is a clear violation of due process and the right to a fair trial, which undermines the basic principles of justice and democracy, adding the conviction of civilians in military courts would intensify Pakistan's challenges on both domestic and international fronts, ultimately resulting in increased international isolation.
Akram demanded the top court of the country to act promptly to rectify injustices, rather than allowing them to persist for decades.
He pointed out that those driven by a lust for power have openly flouted the law and the constitution, operating with total impunity and a lack of concern for accountability.
He declared that May 9 mayhem was a false flag operation aimed at undermining and dismantling the PTI as well as eliminating Imran Khan, adding if there were any basis to these allegations, the government would have initiated an independent judicial commission to thoroughly investigate the matter.
