The Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation increased by 8.76 percent during July-October 2012-13 as compared to the same period of last year, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). Addressing a press conference on Friday, Secretary PBS , Sohail Ahmed said that the CPI inflation witnessed an increase of 0.38 percent in October 2012 over the previous month and 7.66 percent as compared to October 2011.
According to monthly inflation report released by the PBS, the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) witnessed an increase of 0.11 per cent in October 2012 over previous month whereas Sensitive Price Index (SPI) decreased by 0.42 percent. Analysis of the CPI data released by the PBS showed that prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages soared to 7.27 percent during July-October 2012-13 over the same period of last year while prices of non-perishable food items recorded increase of 7.63 percent and perishable food items 5.30 percent.
The cost of alcoholic beverages and tobacco increased by 17.98 percent during the period under review, clothing & footwear 15.16 percent, housing, water, electricity, gas and fuels 4.64 percent, furnishing & household equipment maintenance 17.34 percent, health 15.28 percent, transport 15.72 percent, communication 0.18 percent, recreation and culture 18.51 percent, education 9.91 percent, restaurant and hotels 10.27 percent while prices of miscellaneous items surged by 12.40 percent.
The items that witnessed significant rise in their prices during July-October 2012-13 over July-October 2011-12 include: pulse gram (47.59 percent), Besan (42.78 percent), text books (40.26 percent), household servant (28.96 percent), motor vehicle tax (26.76 percent), onions (23.85 percent), doctor fee (23.42 percent), utensils (21.90 percent), gram whole (21.63 percent), firewood whole (21.53 percent), honey (20.68 percent) and beans (20.41 percent).
Secretary PBS, Sohail Ahmed said that trimmed core inflation has been observed as 10.0 percent during the month of October 2012 over October 2011, while it was 11.7 percent during October 2011 over October 2010. He said the non-food and non-energy core inflation has been observed as 10.8 percent during the month of October 2012 over October 2011, while it was 10.4 percent during October 2011 over October 2010.
Prices of food and non-food items which varied from previous month ie October 2012 over September 2012 include: The price of eggs increased by 17.32 percent in October 2012 over September 2012, onions (9.52 percent), fish (3.31 percent ), honey (2.94 percent ),beans (2.01 percent), fresh vegetables (1.98 percent), sugar (1.27 percent), readymade food (1.24 percent), cereals (1.00 percent) ,bakery & confectionery (0.95 percent ), personal equipments (2.92 percent), woolen readymade garments (2.29 percent), MBBS doctors clinic fee(1.97 percent) cleaning & laundry and house rent (1.89 percent each), kerosene oil (1.79 percent), marriage hall charges (1.77 percent ) readymade garments (1.61 percent) and price of dopatta increased by 1.52 percent in October 2012 as compared to September 2012.
The main food and non-food items which showed increase in their prices during the month of October 2012 as compared to the same month of last year includes: pulse gram (46.46 percent), besan (42.05 percent), eggs (28.67 percent), honey (22.27 percent),beans (20.65 percent),milk powder (16.44 percent),condiments (16.19 percent),gram whole (14.63 percent), cooking oil (13.79 percent), milk fresh (13.09 percent), rice (12.95 percent) , fish (11.44 percent), text books (40.00 percent), motor vehicle tax (25.73 percent),MBBS doctors clinic fee (22.71 percent),household servant (22.53 percent), utensils (21.10 percent), woolen readymade garments (19.74 percent), dopatta (19.53 percent) and price of kerosene oil increased by 19.18 percent from corresponding month of previous year ie October 2012 over October 2011.
