Wheat will be sown in 16.8 million acres of land during the Rabi season in wheat growing parts of Punjab. Sources in the Agriculture Department told the Business Recorder on Sunday the Punjab government had estimated 19.2 million tons of grains in the province.
Punjab is producing over 75 percent wheat in the country and under the plan special attention will be paid to enhance productivity on a sustainable basis to ensure its availability to the masses at affordable prices. It is expected that the area under the wheat crop will be increased in flood-hit districts and wheat production may go up.
The Agriculture Department has directed to use only recommended varieties of wheat to attain maximum output while a massive campaign will soon be started to promote clean, graded, healthy and vigorous seed for use in the province. Besides, farm mechanisation will be specially focused for maximising the yield of wheat and in a bid to increase mechanisation, 20,000 tractors have already been supplied to farmers on Rs 200,000 subsidy each under the green tractor scheme in Punjab.
