Sugarcane growers have warned the Punjab government of burning their crop if the minimum purchase price is not fixed at Rs 280 per maund. The warning was issued at a meeting of the Kisan Board Pakistan (KBP) Central Punjab held at Mansoora on Monday with KBP Central Punjab President Chaudhry Noor Elahi Tutla advocate in the chair.
The meeting was also participated by the KBP Central President Sardar Zafar Hussein, Ashfaq Dogar, Hassan Javed, Dr Muhammad Nawaz Cheena and KBP office-bearers from Kasur, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Nankana, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Sialkot, Narowal and other districts, said KBP Central Information Secretary Haji Muhammad Ramzan. The meeting adopted a unanimous resolution drafted in the light of KBP Central Executive Committee's recommendation and said that growers would besiege the Chief Minister house and provincial assembly if growers of sugarcane crop were neglected. They said that the Punjab should also provide subsidy as Balochistan is providing to its farmers.
The meeting also demanded increase in the support price of rice and cotton. They also decided to fully participate in sit-in planned for November 13 to 15, 2012 in Islamabad by its central body to protest against the government in favour of demands of the farmers.
