Journalists at Spain's top daily newspaper El Pais launched a three-day strike on Tuesday in protest at lay-offs that will cut its staff by a third, workers' representatives said. Of the newspaper's 390 journalists, just 28 - most of them senior editors - were working to produce Wednesday's edition, the president of the works committee Manuel Gonzalez told AFP.
The paper's owner, major media group Prisa, said last month it would cut about 150 jobs and reduce pay as it struggles to survive falls in sales and advertising revenues. It employs about 460 people overall.
The committee is negotiating with management to improve the deal for those being laid off. It vowed to strike from Tuesday to Thursday to push its demands.
