Islamabad and Kabul today (Monday) will hold three-day talks on achieving peace in Afghanistan. A delegation of High Peace Council of Afghanistan, led by its Chairman Salahuddin Rabbani, will visit Islamabad from November 12-14. Rabbani was invited by Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar.
During his visit Rabbani will call on the President and the Prime Minister, hold formal talks with the Foreign Minister and meet the military commanders, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Sunday.
Sources said that the delegation would also hold meetings with political leaders of opposition parties, including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F and Jmaat-e-Islami.
A similar attempt of peace of both countries was derailed last year in September after the assassination of Burhanuddin Rabbani, the former head of the High Peace Council.
The Afghan government later named Rabbani's son, Salahuddin, as the new chief peace envoy. The Afghan government set up the peace council in 2010 to negotiate an end to the decade-long war. The US and its Nato allies plan to withdraw from Afghanistan in 2014. Before leaving this region, the US wants to establish peace in this region.
For this purpose, a trilateral meeting of senior officials of the US, Pakistan and Afghanistan was held in New York in September which reviewed proposals to help an Afghan-led reconciliation process. The meeting was attended by President Zardari, Afghan President Hamid Karzai as well as Salahuddin Rabbani. The invitation for Rabbani's visit was renewed during the trilateral summit.
