The Supreme Court on Monday summoned Inspectors General of Police Islamabad and Punjab along with the team deputed to arrest former chairman of Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra). A three-member bench of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed issued the directives while hearing a case regarding illegal appointment of Tauqir Sadiq as Ogra chairman.
From the outset of hearing, an investigation officer, Waqas Ahmed Khan of National Accountability Bureau (NAB), submitted that sensitive information pertaining to investigation report''s recommendations in the instant matter were being leaked either by police or the NAB The Supreme Court on November 25, 2011 had declared the appointment that Tauqir Sadiq as Ogra chairman illegal. He is accused of causing a massive financial loss to the national kitty.
Waqas Ahmed Khan referred to the October 7 incident when Sadiq allegedly fled his farmhouse in Lahore just half an hour before a police raiding party headed by him reached the precise location. According to him, the NAB is largely dependent on either the Islamabad police or the Lahore police. Deputy Prosecutor General Fauzi Kazim told the court that the other department, which never co-operated with the NAB was the Motorway Police.
Waqas also urged the bench to issue directions to the Islamabad as well as the Lahore police to enhance the level of cooperation with the NAB. In its order, the court also mentioned the lapses that enabled due to Sadiq to avoid arrest by a raiding party. The court ordered the inspectors general of Islamabad and Punjab to accelerate efforts towards arrest to Sadiq. Later, the bench adjourned hearing till November 19.
