Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) will not support the government on the new accountability bill unless its reservations are removed, the party's chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain said on Wednesday. Talking to journalists here, he said that appointing a retired military man as the chairman of an accountability bureau would tantamount to discrimination, pitching different state organs against each other.
"The new accountability bill will create misunderstandings between the military and parliament, besides widening the gap between people and the armed forces," he cautioned. Stressing the need for an across the board accountability of politicians, judges and generals, he said: "Accountability should be equal for all or there will be a clash between intuitions...no former army general should be the head of NAB or any other anti-graft body."
Responding to a question about declining popularity of his party, Chaudhry Shujaat said that no one should underestimate his party's vote bank. "It will emerge as the most popular party in the upcoming elections." He said that no political party had done anything tangible for seeking people's votes.
According to him, only the PML-Q had always kept public interest its top priority. Expressing confidence that the masses would chose PML-Q in polls, he said that his party had done a lot of development work. He said that there was no popular leadership throughout the country wielding clout in all the provinces. If a leader was popular in Punjab, he had no standing in Sindh or other province, he added.
Expressing hope for free and fair elections, the PML-Q chief said that elections would be held by the end of April or in the first week of May, adding that the Election Commission was fully independent. He said that PML-Q was fast gaining popularity in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, adding that a large number of people had started joining the ranks of the PML-Q/ Elements, he said, who had parted ways would be disappointed after the elections.
