Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) has clarified the news item published in some newspapers that S M Science College was merged with the Sindh Madressatul Islam University, now it is being vacated by SMIU to another place. Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh, vice Chancellor of SMIU has said that the S M Science College was not merged in the SMIU; it still works under the administrative control of Sindh education department.
"The fact is that the S M Science College is situated in three old hostel buildings of Sindh Madressah - Hassanally House (built in 1909), Khairpur House (built in 1912) and Sardar House (built in 1919)," he said and added these all the three buildings were built on the land of Sindh Madressah, which served as hostels till 1950's when science classes for Sindh Madressah College (S M College) were started over in these buildings. He said Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah has inaugurated Sindh Madressah College on June 21, 1943, which was housed in the Talpur House, another hostel of SMI, built in July 1901. It was an arts college, not science college. Now Sindh Madressah Model School (boys) is housed in Talpur House. Later on, the arts college was closed by unknown reasons and the science section was named with S M Science College.
The vice chancellor further said from 1972, when Sindh Madressah was nationalised the SM Science College remained under the administrative control of the Sindh government while Sindh Madressah was given under the control of the federal government soon after the nationalisation.
Dr Mohammad Ali Shaikh further said that Sindh Madressah after getting university status this year in the month of February, started to restore its old status under the directives of President Asif Ali Zardari. He said in this respect the Sindh government was requested to either merge S M Science College in SMIU or shift it to another building owned by the Sindh government. In this respect the Sindh government gave such options to the employees of the S M Science College, but they refused to merge in the SMIU, thereafter, the Sindh government decided to give back the hostels in which SM Science College was situated, to its rightful owner Sindh Madressah, and shifted the S M Science College to its nearby building.-PR
