Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) on Wednesday hailed the Supreme Court of Pakistan verdict on Karachi voters' lists case and termed the verdict as "public victory". At a hurriedly called press conference at Idarae Noor-e-Haq, Chief of JI Karachi, Muhammad Hussain Mehnati demanded of the Election Commission of Pakistan to implement the apex court's verdict.
He said the JI lauded the apex court's decision on correction of voters' lists, saying the "the verdict will pave the way for a transparent elections in the country". He urged ECP to immediately start its jobs to rectify the voters' lists. Mehanati said the JI supports the door-to-door drive for correction of voters' lists under the supervision of army and rangers officials. He said the apex court's decision was exactly what the public had been demanding for.
He observed that at least 1 million votes of the city had been shifted to other provinces, which was aimed at allowing the "thappa mafia" to fashion election results as per its will. He said the court's decision has ruined the mafia's plan. JI Karachi chief said huge irregularities had been made in voters lists in Karachi, which his party along with other political groups pointed out to the election commission and raised a joint voice for their correction.
"We [JI] believe the essence of democracy is in transparent elections and correct voters list," he said, adding that the court has protected the public right to vote. He linked the transparent election to establishing lasting peace in Karachi. "It is not possible that without transparent elections, peace will return to Karachi," he said. He demanded of the court to set up monitoring teams for holding transparent elections in Karachi.
