The casting of votes at polling booths would be monitored through web-based live monitoring system in the coming elections. Transparency International Pakistan (TI-P) offered to arrange funds through donor organisations to provide the system to the election commission during TI-Pakistan delegation's meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Fakharuddin G.Ibrahim here on Wednesday.
TI-P delegation was led by its Chairman, Sohail Muzaffar and included Adviser TI-Pakistan, Syed Adil Gilani. The CEC while accepting the offer assured the delegation that it would be his endeavor to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free and fair atmosphere and unfair means are eliminated once for all. This was necessary to improve the image of Pakistan globally as elections in the past had question marks on them.
TI-Pakistan delegation thought that the bye-elections for the national and provincial assembly seats held on Tuesday were "transparent and clean" and congratulated Chief Election Commissioner on this achievement. The results indicated that the corrupt would find it difficult to have a say in the general elections. Voters cannot now be cheated and only those with a clean record would return to the assemblies, said Adil Gilani.
The TI-Pakistan's suggestion that all the voters lists should be put on the election commission web-site was also accepted by the Chief Election Commissioner who appreciates the role the TI-Pakistan is playing in fighting against corruption and bad governance wherever it exists.
Fakharuddin G. Ibrahim also agreed to the TI-Pakistan suggestion that assets declared by parliamentarians should be put on the election commission web-site for the benefit of the general public. This may deter them from indulging in corruption as at the end of the day all their wrong doings would be open to questioning.
