Pakistan People's Party (PPP) on Monday arranged a seminar on the role of political parties in promoting culture of human rights in Pakistan in order to observe International Human Rights Day, here at Pakistan National Council of Arts. Deputy Speaker National Assembly, Faisal Kareem Kundi, was the chief guest on the occasion. He lauded the role of Pakistan People's Party in protection of human rights in Pakistan.
Former Senator Malik Hakmeen recalled his association with PPP leader Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. He said Bhutto selected him as minister for housing in his cabinet and advised him to serve the humanity. Being a minister, Hakmeen said he provided low cost housing schemes for the poor in the four provinces. Dr Khalid Javed recalled his struggle against former dictator Ziaul Haq, as medical college Rawalpindi's student.
He said the son and daughter of former dictator was also studying in the same college when he set ablaze the effigy of the dictator while protesting against him (Zia). He said the history of world was filled with war for human right. He said the December was remembered as 'Fall of Dhaka' when massive human right violations were committed against the innocent people of Bangladesh.
Parliamentary Secretary Human Rights, Rubina Saadat Qaimkhani said that the ruling party passed a number of legislations for the protection of human rights particularly women. Apart from Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), the present government also passed the bill for protection of women from harassment at work places.
Another achievement, she said, was introduction of 'Rs 18 billion Aghaz Haqooq Balochistan' package for the welfare of Balochistan. Senator from Balochistan, Suriya Amiruddin, said that the manifesto- 'rotti, Kapra, Makaan (Food, Cloth and Shelter) of the party was the proof that the party believed in welfare of the poor people of the country.
