A comprehensive policy for the transplantation of human organs such as heart, liver and kidney has been evolved for the government hospitals in the provincial metropolis of Lahore. As per policy, human organs would be transplanted to the needy ones according to the testament of the deceased persons.
The policy for the transplantation of human organs was finalised in a meeting chaired by the Chairman Board of Management, Punjab Institute of Cardiology and Head of Human Organs Transplantation Programme, Professor Dr Jawad Sajid Khan. Among others, the meeting was attended by Principal PGMI & LGH Professor Dr Anjum Habib Vohra, Professor of Surgery Dr Khalid Mahmood, Chief Executive PIC Dr Bilal Zakariyya, Professor Abdul Waheed, Professor Colonel M A Cheema, Dr Tariq Bungash and Dr Amir Latif.
As per policy for the transplantation of human organs, in case of clinical death of the patient having already given the testament, his or her organs would be transplanted to the patient in need. A countrywide campaign, well supported by religious scholars, social organisations, media and dignitaries associated with health sector would also be launched regarding transplantation of human organs.
Addressing the meeting, Professor Jawad Sajid Khan said all the authentic Muslim scholars including Iranians and Egyptians had termed the human organs donation legal and permissible. He said the policy for the transplantation of human organs had been evolved after passage of law by the National Assembly. Professor Dr Anjam Habib Vohra said that human organs transplantation was in practice in Europe and US since long, and after the framing of proper policy in Pakistan, it would also be performed here at low cost.
