Apropos news item entitled "PTCL comes under harsh criticism from Senate body" published in Business Recorder on December 13, 2012, Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited (PTCL) strongly denies the allegations.
"PTCL clarifies that fictitious assertions regarding grey trafficking are baseless and such unwarranted comments are unacceptable. The comments are only meant to further the personal vested interests and damage the reputation of Pakistan's leading telecommunication company. PTCL regrets that the name of PTCL was mentioned out of context with regards to grey trafficking. Contrary to the unsubstantiated allegations, PTCL has laid down strong parameters to assist the regulatory body in checking the grey trafficking in the country.
The primary responsibility of check and control of grey trafficking in the country lies with the Government of Pakistan and PTA, who have taken both technical and regulatory steps to curb the issue. PTA has deployed a Technical System for monitoring and reconciliation of International Telephone Traffic. The system is operational since 2009 with the support of all LDI operators including PTCL.
In collaboration with PTA, PTCL has taken strong administrative actions to address the issue of grey trafficking to culminate this unlawful business. PTCL is playing its leading role in the development of the telecommunications sector of Pakistan. PTCL's vast telecommunications Infrastructure proudly serves as the backbone of Pakistan's telecom network. PTCL has over 25,000 kilometres of Optical Fiber cable and provides Broadband connectivity in more than 1200 towns and cities. PTCL is handling international calling traffic transactions with more than 160 countries of the world and generates millions of dollars for the national exchequer," the clarification concludes.
