Chitralis on Tuesday staged a protest demonstration outside Peshawar Press Club against prolonged closure of Lowari Tunnel, demanding opening of the tunnel on a daily basis to ease the miseries of travellers to and from district Chitral. The dwellers led by Chairman of the Tahafuz Haqooq-i-Chitral Organisation, Sadiq Ameen, general secretary Shakiruddin and other leaders were holding placards and banners inscribed with slogans in favour of their demands and against the government.
They also chanted slogans against the PPP-led government and federal minister for communication. Addressing protesters, Ameen said that the existing rulers have failed to deliver. They are now trying to deceive masses by restoring 'so-called construction work' on the project. This is a political show-off of the incumbent rulers to close the Lowari Tunnel for passengers in the name of construction work on the project, he added.
Ameen further said when the work was halted on the project and its funds were transferred to other constituencies, the elected representatives and minister concerned were become silent spectators, and now when elections are around the corner, the government restored work on the project. These corrupt rulers could not befool the masses anymore, as they know the reality of the existing rulers, he said. He vowed that further exploitation of Chitralis would not be tolerated. He asked the government and authorities concerned to revise the scheduled traffic plan for Lowari Tunnel and stop multiplying miseries of Chitrali people.
