The matter of holding sixth Population and Housing Census is being considered by the Council of Common Interests (CCI) which would soon take a final decision in this regard, the National Assembly was informed on Wednesday. Parliamentary Secretary Sajjadul Hassan, while responding to a question raised by Seema Mohiuddin Jameeli, told the lower house of parliament that Pakistan Bureau of Statistics would conduct the census.
Sajjadul Hassan, however, failed to inform the house about when the last census was conducted in the country. The house was later informed by MNA Yasin Rehman that the last census was held 13 years ago. Abdual Qadir Khanzada said that the government should announce a date for initiating the new census. Answering a question about the imposition of a ban by Nadra on the issuance and renewal of arms licences, Parliamentary Secretary for Interior Rai Mujtaba Kharal said that the ban had been imposed after a ruling by the Sindh High Court (SHC), adding that the ban would remain in place until the issuance of computerised arms licences via Nadra and the Ministry amended rules in this regard.
Nadra, he said, had, therefore, been advised to withhold its operations in this regard for the time being. The ministry has now amended the rules in consultation with Law & Justice Division. Now Ministry of Law and Justice has been requested to advise whether the Ministry of interior should proceed with the issuance of Computerized Arms Licences.
The work of arms licenses issuance was entrusted to Nadra during 2010 and since then all the data has been computerized. A committee has been constituted for checking the validity/ genuineness of arms licenses and licences which had not been issued by the Ministry, he said. As soon as the session started, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Faisal Karim Kundi voiced concern over the absences of relevant ministers during question hour.
