Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has boosted efforts to reach out to electable candidates from Sindh and to achieve this objective the PML-N President Mian Nawaz Sharif is meeting different political figures.
After meeting former Sindh Chief Minister and President PML (Like Minded Group) Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim in Dubai on Tuesday, the PML-N President Thursday met noted political figure of Sindh Sardar Ali Gohar Mahar at his residence and discussed matters pertaining to general elections in the country with particular reference to Sindh.
Views were also exchanged on other national issues and matters of mutual interest, sources said. On the one hand, the PPP is making efforts to neutralise its opponents in Sindh ahead of general elections, while the PML-N is struggling to win the support of electable candidates political analysts believe.
Electoral history shows that the Mahars have been switching sides on and off since the 1988 polls. The Mahars were elected to upper and lower houses as independent candidates and on tickets of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and the PPP. Electoral record shows that Sardar Ali Mohammad Mahar, who served as chief minister for around two years in the Musharraf regime, beat with 23,667 votes his fellow clansman and PPP candidate Haji Ahmed Ali Mahar (359 votes) in the 2002 polls. In the last elections, the former chief minister was elected from NA-201.
Sources claimed that the PML-N President Nawaz Sharif is heard to have invited PML-Functional Pir Sahib Pagara for a meeting and necessary arrangements in this regard are being finalised. Talking to Sardar Ali Gohar Mahar, the PML-N President said that the solution of the manifold problems posed to the country lies in holding general elections in the country in a free, fair and impartial manner. He was of the view that timely elections are vital for a strong and stable Pakistan as it would help overcome the current challenges.
Expressing concern over the situation in Karachi, Nawaz said that the maintenance of law and order in Karachi was necessary for the progress of the country and improvement of the economic situation. He expressed his firm resolve to restore peace and happiness in Karachi if voted to power. He also said the PML-N was closely monitoring the Karachi situation and would hold to account law breakers if an opportunity were given to serve the masses.
The PML-N President also slammed the brutal killings of the anti-polio vaccinators and said the basic obligation of the government was to provide protection to health workers who are waging a just cause to secure the future of the coming generations. He also urged the Ulema to come forward and play their role in making the anti-polio drive a great success. PML-N Sindh President Syed Ghous Ali Shah and the PML-N deputy secretary general Ahsan Iqbal were also present on the occasion.
