The overall security situation in Pakistan remained a source of serious concern during calendar year 2012 with 6,147 terror related deaths while the year ended with the tragic assassination of senior minister Khyber Pakhtunkhawa Bashir Bilour in a suicide attack.
The year proved to be the deadliest in terms of civilian casualties compared to 2011. According to data compiled from various sources, as many as 6,072 people were killed in various terrorist attacks in 2012. Out of a total 6,072 casualties 2,938 were civilians and 691 security forces personnel who lost their lives during the year. While around 2,443 terrorists and insurgents were also killed during the same period.
Last calendar year saw 6,303 deaths including 2,738 civilians, 765 security force personnel and 2443 terrorists or insurgents. During January 2012, as many as 528 people lost their lives including 177 civilians, 117 security forces and 234 terrorists and insurgents.
The casualties increased during February to 733 people where 208 civilians, 59 security forces personnel and 193 terrorists and insurgents were killed in various terror incidents. As many as 733 people were killed in March including 239 civilians, 72 security force personnel and 454 terrorists or insurgents. In April as many as 399 people lost their lives including 239 civilians, 36 security force personnel and 193 terrorists and insurgents.
As many as 516 people killed in May which includes 247 civilians, 76 security force personnel and 193 terrorists or insurgents. Similarly, 656 people were killed including 303 civilians, 64 security force personnel and 289 terrorists or insurgents in June, 2012; while in July 570 terror related deaths were occurred including 303 innocent civilians, 60 security personnel lost their lives and 207 terrorists were killed.
In August, 2012 as many 632 people were killed in various terrorists attacks including 258 civilians, 70 security personnel and 304 terrorists. In September 464 terror related death occurred, of which 278 were civilian, 22 security force personnel and 164 terrorists and insurgents. In October, about 458 people died in various terrorist attacks that included 252 civilians, 40 security force personnel and 166 terrorists and insurgents. While in November 388 people were killed including 288 civilians, 31 security force personnel and 69 terrorists.
In December 343 people were killed including 222 civilians, 75 security force personnel and 46 terrorists/insurgents during various terrorist attacks. Around 337 suspected militants were killed and 34 injured in 46 drone attacks in 2012 while in 2011, 448 suspected militants were killed and 52 injured in 59 drone strikes. Cross border attacks by Taliban in Afghanistan into Pakistan continued in 2012. A daring attack was launched by approximately 100 Taliban militants on June 25 near Sunai Kandau in Barawal Tehsil, Upper Dir, killing six Pakistani soldiers and kidnapping seven, who were later beheaded.
