The city witnessed alarming increase in the incidents of car and cell-phone snatching during 2012, as the Karachiities were deprived of 4797 cars and 19635 mobile phones during the outgoing year. According to CPLC statistics, around 4797 vehicles were snatched at gun point in various parts of the metropolis in 2012, out of which some 2098 vehicles were recovered.
On average around 300 vehicles were stolen every month during 2012. Suzuki vehicles were first choice of the snatchers while Toyota and Honda were at second and third positions, respectively. Moreover, the statistics revealed that most of the car-snatching cases were registered on Friday, as some 61 vehicles were stolen or snatched on the day while the figure remained below 49 in other week days. The most favourite colour for the snatchers was white as 121 cars of the aforesaid colour were snatched or stolen from different areas of metropolis. The Gulshan Iqbal town appeared to be most lucrative area for the wrongdoers while North Nazimabad, Clifton, Jamsheed Town and Shah Faisal area were other highly vulnerable areas for the motorists.
In the same way, around 20446 bikes went missing during the year. Out of the total 20446 incidents of bike-snatching, only 2429 bikes were recovered. The highest cases of bike snatching were reported in July as Karachiites were deprived of 2127 bike only in the said month.
Similarly, the Gulshan Iqbal town again grabbed the top position in bike-snatching incidents where 2680 bikes were snatched while the inhabitants of Jamsheed and city towns were second and third sufferers, respectively. Around 19635 mobile phones were snatched or stolen and the East Zone was the most vulnerable place for mobile users.
