The vaccine used to cure the patients, suffering from measles disease, is not available in Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) at present. Informed sources told Business Recorder, here on Saturday that measles is spreading among the children in Pakistan with each passing day. It is necessary to vaccinate children before it is too late.
"The doctors and medical experts are suggesting public to go for vaccination to prevent the attack of measles on their children. But it is strange to note that the children ward of PIMS does not have measles vaccine", sources added. Measles is an infection of the respiratory system caused by a virus; measles spread through inhaling, and is highly infectious. Almost 90 percent of people without immunity sharing living space with an infected person will have more chances of catching the disease. Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, running nose, and red eyes. Measles is the most deadly of all childhood illnesses. The disease spreads very easily, so it is important to take proper protection measures against the infection. Getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent measles.
Sources told this scribe, " No doubt, measles is spreading in the twin cities as 7-10 children suffering from measles visit the government hospitals daily but it is unfortunate that PIMS, that is being visited by a large number of patients every day mostly from the outskirts of the federal capital, does not have the measles vaccination facility".
Sources said, "To avoid maximum risk of measles, the parents should provide every child with one dose of measles vaccine at nine months and give all children a second opportunity for measles immunisation, generally through mass vaccination campaigns". According to a recent report of World Health Organisation, measles had claimed 103 children lives throughout the country from January 1 to 19. Out of these; 66 died in Sindh, 33 in Balochistan, and seven in Punjab.
