Ghana beat Cape Verde 2-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final in Port Elizabeth Saturday courtesy of 53rd-minute penalty by Mubarak Wakaso and a stoppage time goal from Mubarak Wakaso. The first half saw both sides tentative as neither team could manage a shot on goal, Cape Verde's Heldon coming the closest in 13th minute, whose shot flew over the bar.
After the break, Ghana took the lead against the run of play from the penalty spot after Gyan was brought down in the area by Carlitos' shoulder. Djaniny came the closest to equalising for Cape Verde in the 81st minute. His stinging shot was excellently tipped away by Ghana goalkeeper Fatau Dauda. Ghana fought back wave after wave of Cape Verde attacks and then made it two on the break in injury time through Wakaso after Cape Verde keeper Vozinha came up for a corner.
