Unknown men armed with sophisticated arms, wearing capital police uniform entered Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) headquarters and manhandled Member Finance and Member Technical, it is learnt. "The armed persons dragged both the PTA members from their offices and threatened them of dire consequences. They also confiscated their cellphones on entering the offices, but later on returned the cellphones," sources said.
The armed persons made good their escape when other officials of authority reached the scene on their hue and cry. "People who attacked PTA's members were wearing city police uniform and trying to arrest the authority members," one of the officials said who witnessed the whole scene on condition of anonymity.
Sources alleged that both the members had strongly resisted the Information of Memorandum (IM) for 3G license and did not approve it, which ultimately led to the delay of the process the third time. According to the sources, the government is not happy with both the members and despite ban by the Election Commission of Pakistan for new induction, the Cabinet division has already advertised for both the posts.
It is worth mentioning here that Member Finance is going to retire on February 14, while Member Technical early March this year. The incident has also been confirmed by Member Finance Nasrul Karim Ghaznavi and Sajjad Latif Awan Director General (DG) PTA to Business Recorder, however there is still ambiguity about the uniformed personnel who raided the headquarter, as they did not take PTA officials with them after manhandling.
Member Finance told this correspondent that he did not know about the people; however they were accompanied by DG PTA. "I contacted Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Secretary Interior, however nobody has confirmed that who these people were and who sent them and for what reason. However, he alleged, "I might be punished for not approving IM for 3G license." DG PTA Latif also confirmed that some people wearing Islamabad police uniform came to headquarter on Monday. "The officials told him that they had come from the Interior Ministry and wanted to meet the two members. He took the officials to Member Finance and left the room immediately," said Latif, adding that after some time he heard brawl among the officials and member, but he did not know the reason.
