In a bid to meet the international commitment under Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the government is striving hard to achieve 88 per cent literacy rate till 2015. This was stated by the Punjab Minister for Education Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman.
He was talking to PML-N workers on Monday, said, "Record enrolment of more than 11 million children in government schools has been registered due to Punjab government's developmental measures and the effective roadmap in education sector. The figure was more than one million in excess of the 2008 school census and was the result of Punjab government's various measures including provision of teachers of science and mathematics, better facilities and free textbooks."
According to him, over 70,000 teachers have been recruited on merit in a transparent manner while 92 per cent attendance of teachers and students and 96 per cent availability of facilities and inspection of schools have been ensured. Mujtaba said that Punjab government opened as many as 50 colleges in the province during last four years, out of which 12 colleges were in Lahore. He said that government was extending all out efforts to provide purposeful and professional modern education to the children to make them useful citizens.
He said that IT labs have been set up in more than 5,000 high schools and 515 middle schools. He added that scholarships of ten billions of rupees were being provided to thousands of students within the country and abroad through Endowment Fund. The scholarships were being given to 50,000 students from Punjab Education Endowment Fund this year, he said.
Another PML-N leader Mohammad Pervaiz Malik said that people were fully prepared to defeat Manzoor Wattoo in general elections who, despite the worst performance of PPP government, is still dreaming to form his government in Punjab. He said that People's Party could not set record of development during its five years tenure but it has certainly set records of corruption, malpractices and plunder.
The PML-N leader said that the important reason to appoint Wattoo to the office of PPP Punjab was Wattoo's hypocrisy but the people of Punjab have become fully aware of the real face of Manzoor Wattoo and they will not be deceived by him. He said that the main reason of fame of Manzoor Wattoo was misappropriation of funds of Baitul Mal and widows and stabbing his benefactors but his days of his cunningness and cleverness have been numbered and he will become a part of history after elections.
He advised Wattoo to mentally prepare himself for facing the crushing defeat of PPP in general elections. He said that increasing popularity of PML-N has unnerved the Peoples Party and its allies and now they were engaged in hatching conspiracies against PML-N.
