The persistent torrential rains here at the provincial metropolis exposed the poor management of the sanitation and sewerage system as complete chaos was witnessed due to the rain water flooding the main roads and slum-localities. The heavy spell downpour started on late Sunday night continued on the second day, played havoc in different parts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The rains played havoc in the upper districts and slum-areas of the province, in which dozens of people, including six labours in a factory, Hidal Khail area of Khanzana, women, and children were injured due to the roof caving in and a minor girl died in Matani, suburb area of Peshawar.
As a result of the poor management of sanitation and sewerage system, rain water flooded the main Khyber Road, Bacha Khan square, Sher Shah Suri road, and other link roads, causing difficulty for motorists and the worst kinds of traffic jams. The traffic wardens failed to manage the smooth flow of traffic on all the major and link roads in the prevailing situation.
The heaviest showers were recorded in most parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including district Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Swat, Dir and Chitral, Buner where continuous rain further increased the chill while there was snow fall in the upper areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Northern areas.
The rain water also entered houses in various localities of Peshawar, causing problems for locals in Zaryab colony, Afghan colony, Supply Road, Dalazak Road, Yousafabad, Rasheedabad, Madina Colony, Gulbahar Colony, Namak Mandi, Khayber Bazaar and Qissa Khawani Bazar, Board Bazar, Rampura gate.
Locals complained that the sanitation staff did not perform their duties efficiently to remove waste and garbage from drains in their localities, as a result rain water flooded entire areas. The residents of Nothia, Civil quarters, Swati patak, and Gulbarg faced a similar situation.
According to provincial met office, widespread thunderstorm with snowfall over the hills areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during next 24 hours were expected and they would continue with intervals till Tuesday. So far, 92 millimeter rains was recorded in the upper and lower parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with heavy snow in the upper region of the province. Rains and snowfall are expected during the next 24 hours in Malakand, Hazara divisions, Kashmir, Gilgit Balistan, Murree and Galyat, said an official of met office.
According to the met office, in Malamjabba 3.5feet snowfallis expceted, followed by Kalam 2 feet, Darosh one feet, Dir eight inch, Murree seven inch, Chitral six inch, and Skardu five inch. Parachinar remained the coldest place where it was -10 C followed by Astore -07 C, Gupis, Skardu -03 C, Hunza -02 C. The pollen count remained at 12 per cubic meter respectively.
The Met Office official said that a strong western system was affecting the northern parts of the country and is likely to persist during the next 48 hours. This strong weather system is expected to generate heavy rains with snowfall over the hills in upper parts of the country.
In the next 24 hours, widespread thunderstorm rain with snowfall (scattered heavy falls) over the hills was expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Punjab including Islamabad, Kashmir and Gilgit-Balitistan, while isolated rain is likely in southern Punjab, upper Sindh, Quetta, Zhob divisions. The weather of Abbottabad, Peshawar, Mardan, Parachinar, Swat, Bannu and DI Khan will remain cloudy with chances of rain during this period.
Widespread rain with snowfall over the hills is expected in Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Punjab including Islamabad, Kashmir and Gilgit-Balitistan during the next 48 hours.
In the last 24 hours, widespread rain occurred in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab including Islamabad, Kashmir, while scattered rains fell in upper and Southern Sindh.
According to met office, maximum rain was received by Risalpur 84mm followed by Saidusharif 83mm, Peshawar (PAF) 79mm, Chirat 70mm, Lower Dir 67mm, Rawalpindi 62mm, Islamabad, Kohat, Garidupatta 61mm,Islamabad( Golra) 58mm, Islamabad (Saidpur) 55mm, Mianwali 50mm, Pattan 49mm, Bannu 48mm, Rawalpindi (Shamsabad) 47mm, Rawalpindi (Bokra) 45mm, Dir 40mm, Khuzdar 39mm, Mangla 36mm, Kalat 34mm, Muzaffarabad 30mm, Murree 29mm, Balakot 25mm, Chitral 24mm, Joharabad 23mm, Bahawalnagar, Noorpur Thal 22mm, Sialkot, Kotli 21mm, Kakul, Chakwal 20mm, Lahore (A.P) 19mm, M.B.Din 18mm, Sialkot (A.P) 17mm, Gujranwala, Lahore (PBO) 15mm, Bhakkar 12mm, Okara, Bahawalpur and Sargodha 11 mm respectively during the last 24 hours.
