Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Wednesday declared that acts like challenging the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) are part of conspiracies aimed at postponing the general elections in the country. Reacting to reservations expressed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) over the ECP performance, PML-N senior leader Ahsan Iqbal told reporters here on Wednesday that Pervez Musharraf, Imran Khan and Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri were playing the game of "brother, brother."
The demands of PTI-led Imran Khan and PAT-led Tahir-ul-Qadri may cause hurdles in holding of general elections in the country. "Only the PPP would be real beneficiary if general elections are delayed," he said, adding that "ECP is an independent and sovereign institution like judiciary."
Ahsan said PML-N would continue to exert pressure on the government to hold elections on time and "we would not allow any conspiracy aimed at delaying the polls." He said that postponing the 2013 general polls was against the interests of the nation, adding his party would not allow such a delay take place, and that the elections would take place as per the schedule.
The PML-N leader maintained that the PPP-led coalition government was not showing seriousness on caretaker set up, as it wanted to linger on it till last week. He hoped that the opposition would reach consensus with the government for caretaker set up. Answering a question, Ahsan urged the State Bank of Pakistan not to release more loans to the government. He expressed concern over state of economy.
To another query, he expressed concern over harassment to investigation officers of Ogra. It may be noted that a five-member delegation of PTI led by PTI President Javed Hashmi and Vice President Shah Mehmood Qureshi had a long discussion with Minhaj-ul-Quran Chief Dr Qadri over the political issues of the country, upcoming general elections and formulation of a new ECP. Dr Qadri is moving to the Supreme Court for the reconstitution of ECP.
