A number of religious schools on Wednesday formed a defence platform against the killings of religious scholars, seminaries' students and general public in continued violence in the city and gave a strike call for Friday, February 8, against the continued killings.
At a press conference held at Jamiatul Uloom Islamia, Binori town, head of Wafaqul Madaris al-Arabia, Maulana Saleem Ullah Khan, head of Jamiatul Uloom Islamia, Maulana Abdul Razzaq Iskandar, JUI-F Karachi chief, Qari Muhammad Usman and central spokesman for Ahle Sunnat-Wal-Jamat Aurangzeb Farooqi condemned the killings. They announced that a wheel-jam and shutter-down strike would be observed on February 8 in the city. They demanded immediate removal of Chief Minister and Governor Sindh for their failure to maintain peace.
They also demanded of the government to bring the killers of Maulana Abdul Majeed Deenpuri and other religious scholars, who have been murdered in targeted attacks, to justice. The religious representatives also unfold their protest drive, saying the next step will be holding of academic sessions on the spots of sit-ins, if the ruling coalition did not respond to their demands.
"The government, which fails to protect lives and property of its citizens, has no rights to rule the nation in line with Shariah," they said, adding that their struggle to protect their religious academia, worship places and its clerics against the attacks will remain within the law. They also lamented the government's indifference over the killings of students of religious schools and clerics. "None of the government officials have inquired from us about the killings or attacks at schools or mosques," they said.
