No election or political cell is being operated by any intelligence agency including ISI, Secretary Defence Lieutenant General Asif Yaseen Malik (Retd) stated before National Assembly's Standing Committee on Defence on Wednesday. Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho chaired the session on defence. The defence secretary said that the army had no political agenda and that the ISI did not have any political cell and it would fully support a free and fair general election.
Asif Yaseen Malik denied the report that the US Army Corps had been permitted to build a Tactical Command and Operations Centre (TCOC) compound at the Karachi Airport. He said no permission had been given to the US Army Corps to build a compound at the Karachi Airport. He said the defence ministry had taken notice of the project tender document released from the US Army Corps of Engineers in the Middle East for the construction of the compound and investigation was going on.
In another case, the committee was informed that Bahria's name was used on a temporary injunction, stay order, and was void of any legal footing. The name 'Bahria Town' was to be changed to 'Safari Town (pvt) Ltd' and they had refrained from doing so. The committee directed the Ministry of Defence to assist the Bahria Foundation in the legal proceedings with regard to the Bahria Town.
