In order to build, maintain and operate durable, economical, safe and environment-friendly highways, a seminar for establishment of "Highway Research and Training Centre (HRTC)" was jointly concluded by National Highway Authority (NHA) and Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) here on Wednesday.
In Pakistan, about 50 percent of national highways are in damaged condition, partly because of lack of pavement standards. In order to maintain the good condition of national highways, NHA decided to establish research and training centre aiming to develop the indigenous standards of pavement and train the skilled engineers. Therefore, the Government of Pakistan requested the Government of Japan for technical assistance on the project for the establishment of highway research and training centre. The project consisted of three phases ie establishment of highway research and training centre with NHA's own financial resources; installation of equipment, and technical transfer of pavement technology to HRTC engineers.
In lapse of five years since 2007 till date, JICA with its technical mode of co-operation has successfully installed state of the art equipment in the laboratory, dispatched Japanese experts and sent the functionaries of the HRTC on training to Japan. With modern research and training facility, it is expected that Pakistan will have better highways in future.
