The Sindh Assembly on Wednesday unanimously adopted a joint resolution, urging the provincial government to quickly announce the establishment of a government-run university in Hyderabad. The resolution, which was moved by an MQM lawmaker, Syed Wasim Ahmed, and a PPP woman legislator, Farheen Mughal, urged the government to establish the Hyderabad University.
Earlier, on a point of order, MQM's Syed Sardar Ahmed said his party wanted to set up a university through a private bill in the assembly. In response, Deputy Speaker Shehla Raza said that the bill had been submitted on February 19, seeking inputs from the secretaries of finance and education departments.
She said that the assembly secretariat had not received any reply yet. Syed Sardar Ahmed replied that the house would get no response from the officials concerned. He wondered what was the harm in establishing a university at Hyderabad, and if a university could be set up at Tando Allahyar, why not in Hyderabad?
Sindh Senior Minister Pir Mazharul Haq said that he was in favour of establishing a university in Hyderabad, MQM had tabled the bill "too late", and being the education minister, he could not allow the bill to be introduced in the house. Pointing out that an approval by the chief minister and his cabinet was needed for introducing the bill, he assured MQM's lawmakers that he would personally seek the approval in this regard.
Syed Sardar Ahmed insisted that MQM needed no government support for the establishment of the university and said that MQM lawmakers "will sell their personal belongings and properties to set up the university in Hyderabad". Sindh Law Minister Ayaz Soomro said that the bill could be tabled in the house on March 12 or 13. Pir Mazhar said MQM wanted to set up the university under the banner of Khidmat-e-Khalaq Foundation while the government intended to establish it as a public sector university. Pir Mazhar and Sindh Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed brainstormed and came up with a joint resolution which was passed unanimously.
