Directorate General, Intelligence and Investigation (DGI&I) of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Karachi on Wednesday claimed to have confiscated huge quantity of liquor worth Rs 100 million and detained 11 suspects in a joint operation with Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA).
Speaking at a press briefing, Director, DGI&I Ashar Azeem along with collector Gwadar Dr Arsalan, Commander Muhammad Farooq and General Khwaja said that the action was taken on a tip-off, which revealed that huge quantity of liquor was being transported through a boat to Karachi.
Reacting on the information, a team comprising superintendent Wilayat, Haji Aslam and others had been constituted and the PSMA was taken on board for joint operation. He said the quantity of liquor was not significant but the inter-departmental corporation showed in this operation would help aver such smuggling bids in future.
Meanwhile, General Khwaja of PMSA while giving detailed briefing about the operation said that an intelligence-based operation was carried out on February, 25 2013 in which PSMA and DGI&I participated. On the night of February 24-25, 2013 a suspected boat, AL KHAIR, was chased and apprehended after tiring efforts.
Upon searching of the boat, large quantity of illegal imported liquor was recovered. AL KHAIR boat along with 11 crew members and 24967 bottles of liquor and 57408 tins of bear, worth approximately Rs 100 million, was handed over to DGI&I for further processing of the case. To a question, Commander Muhammad Farooq of PMSA dispelled the impression of carrying out the joint-operation in Balochistan territorial waters, saying that the suspected boat was apprehended in Sindh territorial waters.
