Ukraine's grain exports rose to 17.6 million tonnes so far in the 2012/13 season from 12.9 million tonnes in the same period of the 2011/12 season, the Agriculture Ministry said on Wednesday. The ministry said in a note the volume included 9.0 million tonnes of maize, 6.1 million tonnes of wheat and 2.0 million tonnes of barley.
It said the European Union became the major importer of Ukrainian grain this season, buying 7.7 million tonnes of various grains. Ukraine exported 5.5 million tonnes of its grain to Egypt and 1.9 million tonnes to Saudi Arabia. The former Soviet republic harvested 46.2 million tonnes of grain in 2012 and plans to export between 21 million and 23 million tonnes of grain this season.
