The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) recently imposed a ban on all kind of fresh recruitments in federal and provincial governments while regulatory bodies or regulators were not exempt from the ban, an official of the commission said. Sources told Business Recorder here on Thursday that the ban strictly encompassed regulatory bodies.
Any appointment in regulatory bodies would be a direct violation of the ECP ban, they said. Regulators, they said, would have to follow the ECP rules and should refrain from making appointments. These regulatory bodies include the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra), National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) and others.
Officials confirmed that names of regulatory bodies were not included in the list of 25 requests which were submitted to the ECP by various government departments for consideration. These departments had sought permission for fresh recruitments. The ECP declined all requests but considered some of requests filed by the health department. The ban was imposed on January 30 this year.
